In Quran Allah Almighty says:
Verse 7:172-173of Holy Quran;
And [mention] when your Lord took from the children of Adam – from their loins – their descendants and made them testify of themselves, [saying to them], “Am I not your Lord?” They said, “Yes, we have testified.” [This] – lest you should say on the day of Resurrection, “Indeed, we were of this unaware.” Or [lest] you say, “It was only that our fathers associated [others in worship] with Allah before, and we were but descendants after them. Then would You destroy us for what the falsifiers have done?”
From the above mentioned verse it is clear that when ALLAH Almighty made the souls of the humankind, the initial thing He did was to take a promise from all the humanity in which they all testified to His Lordship. This oath represents the reality that all the humans were made conscious of the fact that ALLAH Almighty is their Lord and they have to to remember it. The things alter for people when they come to this world where they are given liberty of will. Therefore, few people don’t turn towards ALLAH Almighty and will many give different excuses for this action of theirs on the Day of Judgment. What this verse and the actions of people during the oath and when they come to this world gives the major purpose of existence of human in Islam i.e. knowing the ALLAH Almighty or identifying Him is the main purpose of human existence.
